When is Feminism in Art? The Case of Sanja Ivekovic

symposium on the occasion of the exhibition Urgent Matters

Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (NL)

When is Feminism in Art? The Case of Sanja Iveković, is a one-day symposium co-organized by BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht and the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. It takes place on 28 May 2009 from 11.00–18.00 hrs and is organized within the framework of the two-part exhibition by Sanja Ivekovic, Urgent Matters, on view at BAK.

The symposium explores the development of feminist and critical art practices in the “former East” through the case of the remarkably rich body of work of Sanja Iveković. The aim of the symposium is to provide a context through which Iveković’s practice can be engaged with and analyzed in the context of global developments in art, thus contributing to the knowledge and understanding of the history of art in the Central and Eastern European regions through a concrete case of the evolution of a feminist position in a particular cultural and political topography. Invited speakers explore these topics through a discussion of key works in Iveković’s oeuvre and the social, cultural, and political context in which they are situated. Iveković takes part in the panel discussion at the end of the symposium.
